L'Artense, Auvergne Volcanoes Park

Artense is a region located in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, more precisely on a granite plateau south of the Monts Dore. This area is crossed by the majestic Dordogne river, which offers a natural and preserved landscape of great beauty.

Artense at the heart of the Monts Dore hydraulic network

The Artense basin, with an average altitude of 900 m, plays an essential role in regulating the water coming from the Monts Dore. In fact, it receives all the water from this mountain range, thus contributing to the hydrological balance of the region. The rivers which originate in the Monts Dore supply the Dordogne in the Artense basin, contributing to the richness and ecological diversity of this area.

A granite plateau

Thanks to its particular topography and its favorable climate, Artense is a privileged place for local fauna and flora. Vast areas of forests, meadows and peatlands support a wide variety of plant and animal species, some even protected. The landscapes of Artense, marked by the granite reliefs and the green valleys of the Dordogne, offer an idyllic setting for nature and hiking enthusiasts.

Artense and its cultural heritage

In addition to its natural wealth, Artense also has an important cultural and historical heritage. Picturesque villages like Bagnols or the Tour d'Auvergne, Romanesque churches, castles and archaeological sites bear witness to the rich and eventful history of this region. The inhabitants of Artense also perpetuate ancestral traditions, particularly in the areas of agriculture such as Saint Nectaire and crafts.

In short, Artense is a territory of great diversity and singular beauty, where nature and culture blend harmoniously. Its position within the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park gives it particular protection and enhancement, thus allowing visitors to discover and appreciate its riches while respecting the environment.
