Grand Site de France

Grand site of France, the Puy de Dôme is close to Clermont-Ferrand. Belonging to the Chaîne des Puys, it is the highest summit of the latter. 1465m high, it dominates the 80 volcanoes of the Puys chain, listed as World Heritage by Unesco.

 

How to get to the top of Puy de Dôme

The Panoramic of the Domes

The Panoramic of the Domes is the cogwheel train that makes it possible to climb to the top of the Puy de Dôme in about fifteen minutes. it also ensures the return. Following the old road going up to the summit, it offers a nice panorama during the climb, especially over the city of Clermont Ferrand.

The Way of the Mule Drivers

The mule path is, according to historians, the path traveled since antiquity to reach the summit of the Puy de Dôme. The mule track was also used by travellers, merchants and mule drivers to get around the Massif Central.

Two possible departures to the top of Puy de Dôme.< /span>

From the parking lot of the Panoramique des Dômes, you can reach the top by traveling 6kms on the chemin des Muletiers which offers unique panoramas on the Puys and Clermont Ferrand chains.

At the Col de Ceyssat, it is also possible to join the summit of the Puy de Dôme. The Col de Ceyssat being two km from the summit, access is easier with a lower elevation.

Le Chemin des Chevres

The start of the goat path is also at the station starting point of the Panoramique des Dômes. Crossing the meadows and the forest at the foot of the Puy de Dôme, it then offers a superb panorama of the Puy de Come, the Grand Suchet, the Petit Suchet and the Puy Pariou. To preserve the quality of the path, it is laid out with stairs. the arrival at the top of the Puy de Dôme ends by the old road.

The Chaîne des Puys includes 80 volcanoes on the Limagne fault. At the top of the Puy de Dôme, you can observe the Puy de Come, the Grand Suchet, the Petit Suchet and the Puy Pariou

 

Clermont-Ferrand


Clermont Ferrand is about fifteen kilometers from the summit of the Puy de Dôme which dominates from its 1465m the largest city in the Department of Puy de Dôme.

 

Massif of Sancy


Located south of the summit of the Puy de Dôme, we can see the Massif du Sancy perfectly at the top of the Puy de Dôme.
